σατίναι
σατίναι
Grammatical information: f. pl.
Meaning: `coach, carriage for women, equipage' (h. Ven., Sapph., Anacr., E. in lyr.; on the plur. cf. e.g. ὄχεα, on the meaning Leumann Herm. 68, 359f. = Kl. Schr. 206f.);
Derivatives: Besides σάτιλλα π[η]λειὰς τὸ ἄστρον H. (designated as `cart' ; Scherer Gestirnnamen 145 w. lit.).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]
Etymology: As (Phryg.?) LW [loanword] σάτιλλα- can be identical with Arm. sayl `car' (also as constellation) (from *satili̯a); beside it with ν-suffix (hardly n σατίναι l-variation) σατίναι; cf. ἀπήνη. Against Phrygian and for Thracian origin of σάτιλλα Schmitt Glotta 44, 148 ff. -- A certain similarity with σάτιλλα, sayl shows Georg. etli `car, constellation' (Adontz Mél. Bq 1, 5 ff.). S. still WP. 1, 339 w. older lit. and earlier hypotheses. -- Both forms do not suggest IE origin.
